Off Broadway hotel a hit with me!

When I travel from upstate NY to the City for a few days, I like to take the train down. It really beats driving into Manhattan with a stick.

What I like even better is a good deal on a hotel that doesn't skeeve me out.

I have stayed for many years at the Carlton Arms on the corner of E. 25th and 3rd Avenue. It's a funky little place with each room and bath decorated by local artists in a variety of motifs, some tasteful, some not so much. It's really nothing to write home to mother, or to anyone else for that matter, but I like it. I like the resident cat, I like to buy some Chinese food and sit out on the fire escape to eat it, watching the people pass by on 3rd Avenue. I like to walk over to Madison Park, the site of the original Madison Square Garden, and get something to eat at the little food hut there. But some time between visits, a pub opened up across the street on the opposite side of 3rd Avenue, and I spent a restless night listening to a lot of unwelcomed noise.

Too, there is no elevator at the Carlton Arms, so it's a schlep up a steep flight of stairs. That's getting a little old as I get a little older.

Traveling with a companion who is not a risk taker and who likes some of the finer things in life, like shopping at Tiffany's, whether she can afford anything or not, during my last visit to the City, I knew I had to find some better digs for us, without breaking my bank.

I found the Hotel St. James on W. 45th St., just a block and a half from the Times Square TKTS booth (7th Av). Now I call that, location.

The hotel, in business since 1972, has recently been spruced up, and is a twelve story, pre-war "tower." But some of the old touches remain like the ornate iron stair cases, and the old fireplace in my room on the 4th floor. I got a free WIFI connection, and the usual hotel amenities: wake up call, cable TV, direct dial phone in my room (none of which the Carlton Arms offers, by the way), clean, comfortable beds, windows that open.

They could get rid of a few touches, like the freight elevator that they use for the second lift to the upper floors. Maybe that's next on the list. Too, I noticed there was no AC in the window that opened. In March, that's not a problem, but in August, it could be.

Next door was a great Dunhill deli for breakfast (try their corned beef hash) or lunch, and a couple of Irish pubs and restaurants completed our block.

The room, with two double beds and a newly refurbished bath, ran about $160 per night. I really couldn't complain, because that was about half of what we paid the last time I was in New York, when we stayed across the way at the Crowne Plaza.

If you're looking for a good location, cleanliness and comfort, a friendly staff who asks you to leave your key with them as you go out and pick it up as you come in (kind of an old-fashioned touch), try the Hotel St. James.

Think you'll get a better deal on Expedia-type sites?

Being a travel consultant, I get my share of "tire kickers." People who call me and tell me about a trip they'd like to take. They get me to do the research and the legwork, and then they take my information and go book the same thing themselves on sites like Expedia. Sometimes, they even save $20 by doing that. But here are some things to think about before you take advantage of your next travel agent (there aren't THAT many people out there who do it, but I can't deny it hasn't crossed my mind, as well, at times!):

Our tour operators will Match or Beat the price on sites like expedia, so you'll always get the lowest price. And sometimes, our prices are lower than "theirs".

Remember, there are:
* No guarantees with Expedia-type sites
* Expedia rooms are not guaranteed, people can be “walked” to another hotel.
* On Expedia, the client has to pay in full at time of booking, whereas with our agency, there is often a payment option.
* If the price goes down, Expedia-type sites will not call you and tell you. And the guarantee on Travelocity, that if someone books the same EXACT flight as yours and the price goes down, you'll get a refund, is nice, but it rarely happens. For example, how likely is it that if you book a flight from Raleigh, NC to Bangor, ME, going through LaGuardia in NY, that someone else is going to book that exact same flight on Travelocity at a lower price? Not very likely. So it sounds good, but there are no teeth in the guarantee. Kind of like the federal government.

As ASTA always says: “without a travel agent….you are on your own”

For example, when the Iceland Volcano happened, who helped those whose travel was booked on Expedia?

Here's what a sister travel consultant wrote recently. I couldn't have said it better myself. I too have found that people who travel are very willing to have an experienced person handle their travel arrangements and not just the package deals from vendors like Apple Vacations, or Funjet Vacations or a cruise on NCL. I can "work" for you, whether it's a private booking for a condominium for the family's post holiday gathering, a hostel in Alaska for a backpacking trip, or a special night at a lodge in Volcano National Park. If you're too busy, or you just don't like the "computer thing," you can always call me, your Travel Concierge, and I'll do the legwork for you. Read on:

"What I'm finding is that the world is becoming smaller and smaller. Booking with a local tour operator can be as easy as an e-mail and a bank transfer. My seasoned traveler clients are happy that they don't have to be locked in to an air/hotel/tour package. They can be in command of their own itineraries.I now charge multiple service charges for coordinating all the components of their trips: $25 per person ticketing fee, $25 for setting up local transfers, $75 for arranging a private guide, and the list goes on. Don't get me wrong, I love getting those big commission checks from cruise companies and tour operators. But, even when booking packages, I tack on service charges for booking extra nights or side trips.

In the end, my time is being paid for regardless of how much a trip costs or if the company pays a commission. It's a win-win situation. I never say, "No, I can't book that for you," because I know I'll get paid for my services. And, my clients feel safe knowing that all of their bookings are under one roof. When it comes to making changes on their itineraries, they are happy that I will take care of it and that I will also adjust all the other elements of the trip that are affected. Cancel a car rental, adjust dates on a hotel, add transfers - these changes mean more service fees. But, my customers don't mind it at all. In view of how difficult they perceive it is to make changes, they often offer to pay me right off the bat.

I've had wonderful luck locating local tour operators such as China Highlights in Bejiing, Backpacker's Travel in Istanbul, Julie's Taxi in Bangkok. I save their home pages in "my favorites" in Internet Explorer. It's simple and effective. I can access their information in seconds and see whether they can provide the service my client is looking for. No more bulging filing cabinets. My clients may even have my agency's home page saved on their computers – I hope so. That makes it easy for them to find my information and be reminded of what I can do for them.

It's interesting to work with travel companies around the world. They can answer so many of the questions that my clients ask me about their region that I rarely have to call tourist boards any more or tell my customers to "look it up in the guide book." This gives me peace of mind that, even though there's a big world out there, someone with a name and an e-mail address is ready to handle the business I send them. I used to worry about not getting paid a commission for booking local services. Not any more. My niche as a "travel concierge" is blooming, and I love it. Confused About Tipping on a Cruise?

So am I.

The cruiselines often add a $10 per person per day gratuity, and they are so nice that you can even prepay it before you even take your trip.

Call me old fashioned, but I say, even though I sell travel, phooey on that.

I believe in tipping for good service, not just handing over for two persons on a seven day cruise, an extra $140!!

The only ones I want to tip, or should tip is my cabin steward and maybe someone on the waitstaff at a particular restaurant, or one who I dealt with throughout my cruise. I'll decide how much I want to give. If the cruise lines want to hire foreigners for coolie wages and expect me to pick up the rest of their wages in this "gratuity" bit, they've got another thing coming.

The cruise lines don't like to talk about the gratuity, or add it into their fare because they want their prices to seem lower than their completitors. They also don't want you to know that you can refuse to pay the so-called mandatory gratuity.

I did it on Holland America and I'll do it again on NCL. I will tell the Bursar as soon as I get on the ship that I am not paying the gratuity automatically.

I urge other travelers to do the same.

Suggested Walking Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Ireland
# Arrive in Shannon airport, pick-up your rental car and make your way south to the beautiful Kingdom of Kerry. Along the way you could stop in Adare Village for a cup of tea and scones in some of Ireland’s finest thatched cottages. Continue south to Kenmare a haven of tranquility, gourmet food and breathtaking scenery in one of the most natural environments in Europe. The Irish name for Kenmare is “An Neidín” which means ‘Little Nest’ and it is easy to see why as you approach the town. This pretty little town is nestled amongst the surrounding hills and mountains and therefore is an idyllic location for escaping into the Kerry hillside. Kenmare is a place of natural beauty, a place where the mountains, woodlands, green fields, rivers, lakes, the sea and wildlife combine to give a unique setting. Check into your hotel which is a luxurious gem, full of warmth and friendliness.

# Day 2: The Kerry Way [Gortamullen Hill] (2 or 3 hour options) This morning after a hearty breakfast, you set out on your first self guided walk. With packed lunch on board, let us drop you to the start of this fabulous walk and you find your own way back to the Hotel along the well marked The Kerry Way. For very little effort, the views of Kenmare Bay and its many islands is spectacular and very rewarding indeed. For the final descent towards the hotel, you look down into the quaint ‘little nest’ that is Kenmare. This walk can be shortened to 2 hour duration if necessary.

# Day 3: Gleninchaquin Park (3 hours- 1 hour scenic drive, 2 hour walk) Just a few miles from Kenmare is the well kept secret of Gleninchaquin Park. This family run park is located at the end of the stunningly beautiful Gleninchaquin Valley. The car journey alone along the valley floor winding around the peaceful lakes, streams and rugged countryside is the perfect build up to the reward at the end that is Gleninchaquin Park.

The Corkery family has worked very hard to create and maintain this fabulous attraction which compromises of a stunning cascade, a river pool walk and a number of marked walks of varying lengths. However it is the remote enchanting setting of this attraction that makes it so special and well worth the visit.

Day 4: The Old Kenmare/Killarney Road (4.5-5 hours)
# The ‘Old Road’ is teeming with History, scenery, birds and wildlife including the native Red deer. Along the route can be seen the remains of famine settlements abandoned in 1840's and also lazy beds ('undug' potato furrows from the famine times which are now covered with grass). You will also come across an area where the tenants’ houses were broken down to create large stone piles or cairns. These cairns were used as resting places for the muskets used by the landlord at the time (Lord Kenmare) and friends to shoot the deer for sport.

As you stroll along this rough track, it is hard to believe that horse drawn coaches once travelled along this route especially when you come past Corr’s Cascade and reach the enchanting area known as Esknamucky Glen. Here in this narrow ravine you will come across some writing on a stone slab written by a member of the Irish army in the 1800's. 'James Neill Tippy' may have been stationed here to watch out for smugglers on the route smuggling the likes of butter, whiskey or even sheep...

Day 5: The Kenmare Historical Stroll (1-3 hours) & bid farewell to Kenmare
# After a hearty breakfast this morning you can begin with an easy morning walk around the local area. Pick up an information map at reception and head off at your own pace to see the many interesting sights within easy access of the town. Kenmare, Ireland’s Best Kept Town in 2008 has many hidden gems awaiting your visit from the Ancient Druids Circle to Cromwell’s Bridge or the rich Coastal Woodlands of Reennagross Park. If you are lucky enough to visit Kenmare on a Wednesday morning, stop off at the street market with the finest produce available.

This afternoon you bid farewell to this beautiful town and drive north to Limerick. This evening you will enjoy one last night of luxury at No. 1 Pery Square, set overlooking the tree lined “People’s Park” in Limerick’s historic Georgian quarter.

Day 6: Depart for the US
# This morning you have a short drive to Shannon Airport for your flight back to the U.S. taking with you wonderful memories of your Ireland Escape.

Day By Day Itinerary

Our Exciting Itinerary for "Cooking Your Way From Krakow To Zakopane" Culinary Vacation

Day 1 - Sunday
We meet in the lobby of the Grand Hotel in Krakow at 10:00 a.m. for a group transfer by motor coach to the Villa Marilor in Zakopane, our home for the next four days. This spectacular 4-star hotel was once a small palace and now includes a luxurious spa and swimming pool. In addition to its beautiful location, the palace offers traditional Zakopane hospitality. During our drive to Zakopane, we stop at Chocholow and Witow villages, both on the Lesser Poland Timber Architecture Route. Next stop: a sumptuous home-made lunch at an agrotourist farm, Lesniczowka u Zieby, in the village of Dolina Chocholowska. Further exploration of this area may include sampling the famous, handmade oscypki and bryndza cheeses or highlander tea, which includes vodka, before we resume our journey to Zakopane. After settling into Villa Marilor, we take a short tour of this romantic palace, relax in the pool or spa, or go for a leisurely walk around Zakopane. This evening we gather for a festive Welcome Dinner at Villa Marilor restaurant, meet the head chef and dine on local specialties.

Day 2 - Monday
After breakfast, we attend our first cooking class in the highlander village called Gronkow. We learn the secrets of preparing the all-time regional favorite, moskole: potato pancakes with meat and mushrooms. In the afternoon, we travel back to Zakopane and tour this beautiful mountain town for the rest of the day. We visit the many museums, take a leisurely walk along the town's famous Krupowki Street, and stroll a few side streets. Later we ride a cable car up Gubalowka Hill to get the best panoramic view of Zakopane, and the Tatra Mountains and other maintain ranges. Our evening meal is at Bakowo Zohylina restaurant in Zakopane, which offers regional specialties with folk entertainment.

Day 3 - Tuesday
Today we travel to Dursztyn village for our second cooking class. On the menu this time is the undisputed Polish and regional favorite, pierogi, dumplings, with all kinds of stuffings. In the afternoon, we travel to Sromowce-Wyzne village to begin our trip on a wooden raft through the Dunajec River Gorge. It is one of the best-known attractions of this region. The daily raft trips have been organized by "gorale" the highlanders since the early 19th century. To celebrate our third day in beautiful Lesser Poland, we dine at Karczma Pieninska, in the highly picturesque small health resort of Szczawnica. We'll also sample Szczawnica's alkaline spring waters. This night, we celebrate with delicious regional Polish food, drink and music.

Day 4 - Wednesday
Today, we travel to nearby Lopuszna to cook with village women. Using a traditional regional recipe we prepare kwasnica goralsko, highlander sauerkraut soup, as part of our lunch. Before leaving Lopuszna, we may also visit the 16th-century wooden church and a manor house that accommodates the Noble Culture Museum. Then, we travel to Debno Podhalanskie village to visit a timber church where the interior includes unique paintings and precious Gothic sculptures from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The church is on the UNESCO List of World Heritage sites. Further exploration of this unique area may include a carriage ride and hike to gorgeous Morskie Oko Lake, or learning local crafts at the School of Dying Trades in Bukowina Tatrzanska. We also visit bacowka, a small mountain shepherd hut, where smoked sheep cheese is made in a traditional way by a highlander. Sample the famous "oscypek" at a cheese and lamb tasting. Tonight, for the final meal of our highlander culinary adventure, we dine at the Karczma Czarci Jar restaurant in Zakopane. The restaurant is famous among locals and tourists for its outstanding, hearty regional fare.

Day 5 - Thursday
After an early breakfast, we travel to Krakow, the capital of Lesser Poland, to begin our urban culinary experience. On the way to Krakow, we make a short stop at the city of Nowy Targ to do some shopping at the local open market. Every Thursday, people from the entire region (and even neighboring Slovakia) shop at this famous market. After we check into the luxurious, 4-star Hotel Turowka, located within Krakow's metropolitan area, where we'll stay for the next two days, we take a guided tour of the city. Krakow is Poland's third largest city and escaped the devastation that obliterated other Polish cities during World War II. Its perfectly preserved medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is on the itinerary for this afternoon's tour. We also visit Market Square, the largest medieval town square in Europe, the 14th-century Wawel Castle and Cathedral, and Kazimierz, former Jewish district. Later, we will also venture to a fresh food market, called Stary Kleparz, a centuries-old tradition. Locals and visitors shop in an unforgettable atmosphere for fresh, traditional Polish food products, which we'll have an opportunity to taste: breads, cheeses, meats, fruits and vegetables. Krakow is full of restaurants that offer memorable dining experiences. Tonight we dine on modern Polish cuisine at Ancora restaurant, located near the Market Square. Signature dishes by owner/chef Adam Chrzastowski are beautifully presented and of exceptional quality.

Day 6 - Friday
After breakfast, we head to the Culinary Institute in Cracow near Wieliczka for our last cooking class. We'll learn how to prepare a typical Polish three-course meal with the owner and head chef of the institute, Marek Widomski. After our class we'll tour the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine, a virtual underground city, with galleries, lakes, chapels and murals all carved from salt and a UNESCO World Heritage site. After our Wieliczka tour, we'll do more shopping! Krakow offers a good choice of art, crafts, and souvenirs. Our Farewell Dinner will be at Wesele restaurant, serving old Polish and Krakow delicacies and specialties located in the heart of Krakow's Market Square.

Day 7 - Saturday
Depart for your home country after breakfast, or make your own arrangements to stay longer in beautiful Krakow.

Even though our vacations are leisurely, you may want to consider staying an extra night at the Grand and Turowka hotels, located within Krakow's metropolitan area, before and/or after the trip. You may find that the extra time will make your week even more relaxing and enjoyable.

Day 1: Longyearbyen, Norway
Embark the Prince Albert II this evening and depart on your exciting 7-day Silversea � �Expedition Spitsbergen�. You will be introduced to your Expedition Team and receive a Zodiac briefing. Tonight we invite you to attend a special Welcome Aboard cocktail party.

Days 2-7: Exploring Svalbard
Join us for a journey along an expansive archipelago of the Arctic Ocean woven between the North Pole and Norway. Svalbard is one of the last major European wilderness areas with pristine mountains, fauna, deep fjords, picturesque icebergs, and massive ice sheets. Our goal on this voyage is to explore the western sections of Svalbard�s breathtaking and the dramatic Spitsbergen. Once there, we will locate wildlife and spend the maximum amount of time possible hiking on the tundra. Spitsbergen is home to approximately 5,000 polar bears and we hope to encounter a good number of them during our trip.

We will travel along the same routes as famous polar explorers such as Andr�e, Nordenski�ld, Amundsen and Nobile. We will trek along beaches blanketed with walruses, get to know the indigenous reindeer, and maybe even spot the Arctic fox or Bearded seal. Seabirds, such as Ivory gulls, auks and puffins, will be our constant companions as we admire their playfulness and grace. We might even encounter a few whales. A variety of known species frequent the area, in particular the Minke and Beluga.

Our flexible itinerary allows us to take advantage of favourable ice and weather conditions. We will search for walruses, seals, reindeer, Arctic foxes and polar bears. Shore walks and Zodiac landings will bring us up close to the mystical settings and passing icebergs. Each day our Expedition Leader and Captain will determine our best course, depending on changing weather, ice conditions and the wildlife we encounter. In the true spirit of adventure cruising, our Expedition Leader will provide daily updates. Here is a list of places we may visit:

� Hornsund � This is the southernmost fjord on the rugged west coast of Spitsbergen Island. Jagged mountain peaks tower above glacier-filled bays. Listen for the crash of white thunder as huge chunks of ice fall into the fjord. Amidst floating icebergs jewels, watch for bearded seals, the rare Beluga whale and the king of the Arctic � the polar bear. Sightings are fairly common as the polar bear�s favourite food, the Ringed seal, breeds in the fjord. The surrounding bird cliffs are home to thousands of pairs of nesting Little auks. We may visit the Polish research station or the remains of whaling stations and trappers� huts.

� Liefdefjorden � Basement rocks south and west of Liefdefjorden feature scenery with high, jagged mountains and strong glaciations, which culminate in the large calving front of the Monacobreen (Glacier of Monaco).

� Dansk�ya Island � Rove across a small island off the northwest corner of Spitsbergen that is scattered with remnants of an ill-fated attempt by three Swedes to fly a balloon to the North Pole. The balloon went down because of icing, just 240 miles (386 km) north of the island.

� Smeerenburg � This island�s name literally means �Blubber Town� in Dutch. Ruins of some of the island�s earliest settlers, Dutch whalers, are preserved at Norway�s North-West Spitsbergen National Park.

� Prins Karls Forland � Off the west coast of Spitsbergen, we encounter the island home of Forland National Park with cragged mountains, massive glaciers and remarkable wildlife. The entire island and the surrounding seas make up Forland National Park. Members of our Expedition Team takes us ashore at Poolypnten, a well-known walrus haul out, where and our marine biologist explains the habits and habitat of these amazing creatures.

� Kongfjord or Kings Bay � Cutting into the west coast of Spitsbergen and reaching inland about 15 miles (24 kilometres) and spanning up to 6 miles (10 kilometres) wide, Kongfjord is a splendid place to behold. Together with our onboard geologist, we will explore its complicated geological formations and visit the 14th of July glacier. We also hope to land at Blomstrand, a name not referring to a flower-covered beach, but rather in memory of a Swedish chemist.

� Magdalenafjord � This majestic fjord is normally accessible year-round because of the influence of the West Spitsbergen Current or Gulf Stream. Landing via Zodiac, we discover the alluring fjord and search for wildlife.

� Ice Cruising � With the strengthened hull of the Prince Albert II, we have the perfect platform to search for walrus and polar bears as we devote at least one day to exploring the pack ice north of Spitsbergen. Conditions permitting, our Expedition Leader may choose to take us out in the Zodiacs for an even closer look.

Day 8: Longyearbyen, Norway
This morning we arrive at Longyearbyen before breakfast, following we will disembark Prince Albert II.

Cruise West - one of the best in small ship cruising

If you're like me and you are concerned about the environment and messing it up when we travel somewhere, I'll tell you that one of the most fragile places, to me, is Alaska. It is the number one travel destination of Americans and it's tough when you feel that the trip you're on is contributing to the problem.

One of the things that I particularly like is taking a small ship cruise, and Cruise West is one of the best from my study of it.

Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but it's worth it. You get to know pretty much everyone on board because you're looking at maybe 100-120 other passengers. The food is usually top notch and the atmosphere is intimate. (Not that you can't be alone, because you can!). Evenings are often spent not at a Vegas-type show, or in a casino, but listening to a historian or naturalist who knows the place inside out.

Cruise West always begins around this time of year to offer discounts on it's cruise for early booking and so on. So if you're thinking about Alaska, this is the way to go. This cruise leaves out of Seattle, which is Cruise West' home base and goes one way. BERMUDA: a great little place to visit, another country, but only 650 miles from the U.S.!

You can get to Bermuda by air, or do it the way I did, by cruise ship. Cruises leave NY's harbor, as well as Boston and Norfolk Virginia most weeks throughout the spring and summer.

NCL's ships remain in the Bermuda King's Wharf port for three days, allowing you to use the ship as your hotel while you explore this quaint group of islands.

The beaches are lovely...pink shaded sand and turquoise waters. Snorkeling is heavenly. You can ride from one end of Bermuda to the other on local buses and ferries. 'Hike, or rental a motor scooter to explore a bit of the interior.

The World Heritage town of St. George's is a must for history buffs.

Check out the beautiful park, museum and old post office in Hamilton.

Cruising in 2009/2010

We've booked a second cruise with NCL for January 2010, to South America, around Cape Horn. It was a pretty good deal...first, we paid for a $250 last May when we were on a cruise to Bermuda, so we could reserve any cruise after that with only the $250 instead of the $500-800 deposit that is usually required. But still, even that amount isn't bad, and you have lots of time to pay on the cruise!

Another thing that NCL is offering is 50% off the second traveler...actually, you each get 25% off your fare. And then, NCL is offering, on top of that, shipboard credit: $50 for an inside cabin, $100 for an oceanview, and on up, to $500 if you want to book the top shelf staterooms.

I plan to research the several ports we'll be visiting in Argentina and Chile next January and will post that information here. I'm looking forward to this cruise; I have never been in South America!
